Dry Eyes

image Dry Eyes

Dry Eye Syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca), often referred to simply as 'dry eyes' or 'dry eye', is a common eye condition. It occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears, or when the tears evaporate too quickly. This leads to dryness, which causes soreness and inflammation.

Dry eye syndrome can be caused by ageing, blepharitis, Sjogren's syndrome, damage to the eye and medication such as antidepressants, antihistamines and the contraceptive pill.

Symptoms of dry eye syndrome include irritated eyes, a slight blurring of vision from time to time and a sensitivity to bright lights. Thankfully treatments such as artificial tears and eye ointments are good at relieving such symptoms.
