Pityriasis versicolor, also known as tinea versicolor, is a common skin condition caused by the excessive growth of a yeast fungus called Pityrosporum orbiculare (Malassezia furfur). The affected area of skin, usually on the upper back and chest, becomes scaly and develops pale red or brownish patches. The condition is most noticeable on people with tanned or darker skin.
