Cold sores are caused by the common herpes simplex virus (HSV). Cold Sores are transmitted by close contact, like kissing. Most people have the virus, but only when the body's defences are weak (e.g. when we have a cold) do the symptoms show. You should avoiding touching cold sores, as they are easily spread to other parts of the body. Generally, treatments should be applied 5 times a day, for 5 days, as soon as the symptoms occur.
If you are prone to cold sores, particularly during the winter months, you may like to try taking a supplement containing Lysine which has been shown to suppress the growth of the herpes simplex virus.
