Laxatives

Oral laxatives:
Come in various forms tablets, capsules, liquids, and powders. They are the most common type and are taken by mouth.

Bulk-forming laxatives
Include ispaghula husk and methylcellulose, which absorb water to increase stool volume, making it easier to pass. These laxatives generally work gradually.

Osmotic laxatives:
Lactulose and macrogol (PEG) work by drawing water into the bowel, softening stools. They are commonly used for regular or ongoing treatment.

Stimulant laxatives:
Senna, bisacodyl, and sodium picosulfate are medications that promote bowel contractions. They usually work faster than other types of laxatives.

Rectal Laxatives: (Suppositories & Enemas)
Suppositories like glycerin and bisacodyl act more quickly because they are administered directly into the rectum. They stimulate the bowel or soften stool locally, usually producing a faster response than oral options.

Enemas:
Sodium citrate, sodium phosphate, micro-enemas. Introduce fluid into the rectum to soften stool and trigger bowel movement. Often used when rapid relief is needed.

Lubricant Laxatives:
liquid paraffin (less commonly used today). Coat the stool to make it easier to pass.

Combination Products:
Some OTC remedies combine two types of ingredients (e.g., stool softener + stimulant).
