The Banana Republic brand started from esoteric beginnings when in 1978 Mel and Patricia Ziegler opened a small chain selling safari and travel themed clothing in stores theatrically dressed to mimic exotic jungle locations. Famed for their hand illustrated catalogues and non-western influenced fashions the Ziegler's gained enough notoriety to lead GAP to acquire the Banana Republic name in 1983, subsequently homogenising it into the brand consumers recognise today.
Releasing it's first fragrance in 1995 Banana Republic perfumes, often employing suitably poetic titles and textbook chic design concepts, offer high street alternatives to designer brands to suit the more modest pocket.
