The causes of insomnia are many and varied. Sleep disturbance can, for example, be triggered by relatively simple environmental events such as excessive noise or too much light. It can be related to physical factors, such as diet or exercise. Sleep can also be disturbed by stress, either chronic or acute, and emotional events. Click here for insomnia information.
Sedating antihistamines are suitable for those suffering with occasional periods of sleeplessness. 1-2 weeks treatment is best alongside relaxation techniques and avoidance of alcohol and caffeine. See your doctor if you still have trouble sleeping after this period of time or consider a herbal treatment instead.
Valerian, hops and passion flower are the key herbs found in herbal sleeping tablets. Usually taken around an hour before bedtime after a meal. Morning-after drowsiness is possible, but less common than with antihistamines.
If you find tablets difficult to swallow why not try a different delivery method such as drops on the tongue or in a drink or mouth sprays.
