Teething
 |
|
Teething is a natural part of a young child's development. These first teeth, known as primary, deciduous, milk or baby teeth, usually develop while a baby is growing inside the womb. Normally, these first teeth begin to emerge when the baby is six to nine months old, although there are no hard and fast rules. The complete set of twenty primary teeth should be in place by the time a child reaches two-and-a-half years of age.
Teething is a natural process and should not prove to be a big problem, but some children seem to cope with it better than others. Some show very few signs of teething, while others may find the experience a painful one. If a child is teething they may appear restless and grouchy, as well as display an increased interest in biting, chewing and gnawing things. Their gums will appear red and sore; they may also experience a rise in temperature.
Contrary to popular belief, the emerging teeth do not actually cut through the gums, instead, the baby's body releases a chemical that causes sections of the gums to die and separate. This allows the new teeth to emerge without causing too much unnecessary discomfort.
We have a range of products such as: teething gels, teething rings, teething powders and teething biscuits to help your child deal with the possible discomfort caused by teething. For further information, please visit our Teething Advice page.
