Ringworm - tinea corporis
Ringworm is not, as the name suggests, caused by a worm, but a fungal infection of the skin that can affect the feet, toenails and scalp. The medical term for ringworm is tinea corporis.
Ringworm of the feet, toenails and groin are known as tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea unguium (fungal nail infection) and tinea crurus (jock itch) repectively.
The symptoms of ringworm are scaly red, oval or ring shaped patches on the skin. that spread from the centre outwards. These infected areas are usually itchy. Ringworm can be effectively treated using an antifungal cream.
