Fungal Nail FAQ's
1. What is a fungal nail infection? A fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) affects fingernails and toenails. It most commonly affects adults and can sometimes become painful. Infection is caused by fungi and if left untreated can spread to other nails or may even result in loss of the nail.
2. How do you get a fungal nail? A fungal nail infection is commonly caused by the same fungus that causes athlete's foot. Anyone can get a fungal nail infection but certain factors can increase the likelihood of an infection developing:Old age.Sports and exercise.Smoking.Occupations that involve having hands or feet in water.Having sweaty feet or hands.Medical conditions such as psoriasis or diabetes.
3. How will I know if my nail is infected? Fungal infections can be identified by the following symptoms:Thickened, white or yellow/brownish nails.Distorted nail shape.Brittleness and scaliness.Crumbly nail surface.
4. Should I see my doctor? If your nail is quite badly infected, e.g is crumbly and flaky, causing pain or if more than 2 nails are infected, then it is best to visit the doctor as stronger medication my be required on prescription.
5. Can I treat a fungal nail infection without prescription or a visit to the GP? A mild fungal nail infection can be treated at home if there are no more than two nails infected in total. Any more than this and you must see your doctor. A mild infection will not cover the entire nail, most usually just the tip; and at this stage the nail will not be crumbly or causing pain. There are a range of products available from once weekly treatments to all-natural anti-fungals.
6. What do I do to treat an infected nail?Clean the nail well with an antiseptic solution (such as TCP Liquid Antiseptic, Savlon or Optima Antiseptics which can also be used to clean any implements (e.g scissors and nail files). File the nail down before using a topical treatment such as Curanail, or ClearZal. Do this daily or weekly depending on the manufacturers instructions. If you prefer an all-natural approach chose from Neem Care Oil or one of the tea tree solutions from Thursday Plantation or Optima. Use an anti-fungal powder like Canesten AF Powder or Scholl Athlete's Foot Powder to treat feet and shoes to prevent infection spreading to other toes.
7. How long will treatment take? Treatment time can vary but usually takes between 6-12 months. Only stop treatment once the infected nail has completely grown out. If you see no improvement after 3 months or have been treating an infection for longer than 12 months it may be worth seeing your doctor. If you're not already doing so try using Curanail as it is the strongest treatment available without prescription.
8. Can my finger nails become infected? Yes. Fungal infection in finger nails will usually be caused by a yeast infection called candida. If hands are in water a lot the skin around the nail can become damaged which will allow infection in.
9. Is it contagious? Fungal nail infections are contagious and can easily spread to other nails. Like Athlete's Foot (Tinea Pedis)], infection can spread from person to person, particularly if using communal showers or sharing towels. When treating a fungal nail, clean any instruments used (i.e. nail files and scissors) with antiseptic to prevent the infection spreading. A toenail infection can spread to a fingernail if you don't wash your hands properly after treatment!
10. I'm pregnant/breast feeding, are there any treatments I can use? Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Anti-Fungal Nail Solution is the only fungal nail treatment we sell that is safe for use during pregnancy or lactation. Canesten AF Powder is also safe for use during this time.
11. Can children use treatments? It is best to check with the doctor if you suspect your child has a fungal nail infection. Children aged 6 or more can use most of the fungal nail treatments we sell except for Curanail- this can only be used by people over the age of 18.
12. How can I prevent infection in the future? Keep your feet clean and always be sure to dry between the toes! Wear cotton socks and leather shoes to let your feet to breathe and also make sure you change your socks daily. Try to keep nails trimmed and clean underneath them regularly. Using an anti-fungal foot powder like Canesten AF Powder can help to stop infection coming back.
