Candidiasis is an infection of any of the Candida species of fungi, particularly Candida albicans, the most common. Most instances of candidiasis are superficial infections of skin and the mucous membranes.
Candida yeasts are naturally present in humans, both inside and outside the body. Changes in the levels of these yeasts can lead to fungal infections of the skin and mucous membranes, particularly in warm, moist places. Common examples of candidal infections are thrush (vaginal) and infected sweat rash.
Thrush is another name for candidiasis. This can cause some confusion as many of us think of thrush as being just a fungal infection of the genitals. Candidal vulvovaginitis is the term for vaginal candidiasis.
Antifungals such as clotrimazole (Canesten) that target yeast and fungus infections provide effective relief from candidal conditions.
