Nappy rash is a common irritation of the skin that most babies will get at some point. The term nappy rash is generally used to describe any type of rash or skin condition in the nappy area. Usually, nappy rash is caused by your child's skin being in contact with a dirty nappy for too long. Over time, the urine and faeces inside a dirty nappy can turn into ammonia, which can begin to eat into your baby's skin and cause irritation. This cause of nappy rash is known as irritant dermatitis.
In cases of nappy rash, the skin will usually become sore and irritated under and around the nappy; occasionally this will spread down the legs or up to the abdomen. The irritated skin will come out in pink or red spots or blotches.
Nappy rash can also be caused by a fungal infection due to dampness inside the nappy. This is commonly caused by Candida albicans, leading to the condition being termed candida nappy rash or nappy candidiasis. A nappy rash caused by a fungal infection can be particularly unpleasant for a baby as it can sting the skin when the nappy is soiled.
Nappy rash can be made worse by a tight nappy as this will rub the baby's skin and prevent air from circulating.
