What is Group B Strep Test?
Group B Strep is a normal bacterium found in the vagina and bowel of about one in four women in the UK. It is not harmful to the carrier and is not a sexually transmitted disease.

Why do I need to know about Group B Strep if I'm pregnant?
Babies born to women who carry Group B can be exposed to it around birth. Most babies born to women who carry Group B Strep are healthy, but in a small number of cases it can cause infections that can be life threatening to the baby.

How do I find out if I carry Group B strep?
Group B Strep carriage can be detected with a simple test after taking swabs from the vagina and rectum and sending them to the laboratory. Group B Strep Carriage can come and go so testing usually takes place after 35 weeks of pregnancy.

Testing is not routinely available on the NHS.

What happens if I carry Group B Strep?
If a test shows you carry Group B Strep you should notify the healthcare professionals caring for you during your pregnancy - Such as your midwife or obstetrician (doctor). You should be offered antibiotics into a vein (intravenously) during labour.

Directions for use:
GBS carriage can come and go, though tests are very predictive for a period of 5 weeks or so. Testing is usually undertaken after 35 weeks of pregnancy. Two swabs need to be taken and be accompanied with a completed request form showing:

Patients's name, address and date of birth. (Please provide the address to where results are to be sent).
Mobile phone number if you would like also to receive results by text message.
Name and full address, phone and or fax number of Midwife and/or Obstetrician to whom results will be sent.

The result of the test will be available within 3 working days of receipt of swabs. Results will be sent both to the patient and to the named healthcare professional indicating whether GBS has been isolated (positive) or not (not-isolated).

Please read the following instructions and the included instructions booklet first, slowly and carefully, before attempting to collect your sample.

The test kit contains two swab packs, either one can be used for your vaginal or rectal sample. Both swabs in the pack are sterile and it is important that you do not touch the cotton end of the swab with your fingers or let it come into contact with other surfaces.

Label swab tubes correctly by writing:

Name, date of birth, location of each swab (lower vaginal without speculum, or rectal).

VAGINAL SWAB INSTRUCTIONS:
Please wash your hands before taking a sample.
It is important to maintain a comfortable balance during the collection procedure.
Take one swab packet and peel it open from the top. Take out the collection tube.
Label the collection tube correctly by writing: Name, date of birth and location of swab (lower vaginal without speculum).
Twist and remove the white cap from the collection tube and throw it away. Keep the tube upright and put it to one side.
Take out the blue topped swab. Do not touch the soft swab end or let it come into contact with surfaces.
Hold the swab by the cap with one hand so the swab tip is pointing towards you.
With your other hand, gently spread the skin outside the vagina. Insert the tip of the swab into the vagina opening. Point the tip towards your lower back and relax your muscles.
Gently slide the swab no more than 2 - 4cm into the vagina. If the swab does not slide easily, gently rotate it as you push. If it is too difficult, do not attempt to continue.
Make sure the swab touches the walls of the vagina so that moisture is absorbed by the swab for 10 - 15 seconds.
Withdraw the swab and place into the collection tube. Push the swab all the way in, ensuring the blue cap is sealed securely.
Place the sample into the post-paid return envelope.

RECTAL SWAB INSTRUCTIONS:
Please wash your hands before taking a sample.
It is important to maintain a comfortable balance during the collection procedure.
Take one swab packet and peel it open from the top. Take out the collection tube.
Label the collection tube correctly by writing: Name, date of birth and location of swab (lower vaginal without speculum).
Twist and remove the white cap from the collection tube and throw it away. Keep the tube upright and put it to one side.
Take out the blue topped swab. Do not touch the soft swab end or let it come into contact with surfaces.
Holding the swab tightly, slowly insert the swab gently into the anus so that not more than 1 - 2cm of the swab is in the rectum.
Gently twist the swab slightly as you slowly pull it out of your anus.
Withdraw the swab and place into the collection tube. Push the swab all the way in, ensuring the blue cap is sealed securely.
Place the sample into the post-paid return envelope together with your completed request form.

You are now ready to seal the blue self addressed post-paid mailer. Please post your samples to The Doctors Laboratory as soon as possible from Any Royal Mail post box in the UK.
