Menopause
The menopause occurs in all women usually any time from around the age of 45 onwards. The average age is 51 although some women enter the menopause early.
The menopause normally happens when the ovaries naturally fail to produce oestrogen and progesterone when they have few remaining egg cells. However, some women may enter the menopause as a result of treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy or when the ovaries are removed, often at the time of a hysterectomy.
Menopause means the last menstrual period. Periods stop because the low levels of oestrogen and progesterone do not stimulate the lining of the womb (endometrium) in the normal cycle. Hormone levels can fluctuate for several years before eventually becoming so low that the endometrium stays thin and does not bleed.
Symptoms can be physical, psychological and behavioural: anything from hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, irritability and weight gain around the midriff.
Not all women can or want to use HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) so in order to alleviate your symptoms you may need to make adjustments to your diet and lifestyle.
