Echinacea is a herbaceous flowering plant, endemic to eastern and central North America, and is commonly called purple coneflower. Echinacea was widely used by the indigenous peoples of America for its general medicinal qualities. These peoples learned of Echinacea by observing elk seeking out the plants and consuming them when sick or wounded.
Echinacea is now most commonly used for being anti-viral, strengthening the immune system and reducing inflammatory chemicals when ill. It also has antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-allergenic properties.
