The term Lecithin is the common or commercial name for a naturally occurring mixture of similar compounds chemically identified as Phosphatides or Phospholipids. The principle components of the natural mixture are Phosphatidyl Choline, Phosphatidyl Ethanolamine, Phosphatidyl Inositol and related phosphorus-containing lipids.
It is now generally recognised that the most important ingredient of Lecithin in certain aspects is Phosphatidyl Choline. When this is eaten, the digestive system reduces it to Choline which is then built up in the body again to Phosphatidyl Choline. The important functions of Choline in the body are therefore (i) as a precursor of Phosphatidyl Choline, an essential compound of all body cell membranes and (ii) as a precursor of Acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter.
According to a recent review Choline has been used in human supplementation for more than 50 years. The major sites of its biological action are the Nervous system, Cardiovascular system and the mechanisms that store and transport fats and cholesterol. Although diet is not the only source of Choline - several organs possess the ability to synthesize the substance 'de novo' - a dietary supply helps safeguard the body's requirements, and in animals appears essential.
A study on human beings indicates that large intakes of Lecithin increase serum Choline concentration significantly and for longer periods than with Choline. This longer duration of availability makes Lecithin (i.e. Phosphatidyl Choline) the source of choice for Choline supplementation.
