Emollients & Barrier Creams If you suffer from severely dry, scaly and chapped skin conditions, including eczema and dermatitis, emollients and barrier creams are designed to help to soften and protect the skin and lock in moisture. The majority of the products below contain various formulations of soft white paraffin, light liquid paraffin. These are designed to create a protective barrier over the skin that prevents moisture from being lost. This means skin is softened and soothes and ermains hydrated. Standard Emollients: Emollients are primarily used for relief from dry, chapped or flaky skin. The following ranges are simple in composition, unperfumed and often prescribed by doctors. However, it is often cheaper to buy them directly from Express Chemist than to pay the prescription charge! Note that the creams tend to be the lightest and most suitable for daytime use, and the ointments tend to be thicker and greasier and hence more suitable for night-time use. Bath emollients are liquid and water-dispersible, and it's usually possible to rub them directly into the skin too where they can be easily absorbed.

Barrier Creams: Barrier creams are emollients that are designed to protect the skin from external damage through dirt, mud, water etc. Barrier creams are generally less greasy to the touch than standard emollients so you can apply them to your hands before doing work that requires manual dexterity. Some barrier creams also have anti-bacterial properties.
