F.A.Q's about Lamisil

1. What is Lamisil?
Lamisil is a treatment containing Terbinafina Hydrochloride (1%) for anti-fungal skin infections.

2. What does Lamisil do?
The active ingredient in Lamisil works by affecting the cell membranes of the fungus. The fungi membrane breaks down and leaks out the vital components that keep them alive. This eventually destroys the fungi, killing the infection.

3. What makes Lamisil different to other anti-fungal products?
The Lamisil range of products all contain terbinafine and have been specifically developed to treat an array of fungal skin infections. All Lamisil products are formulated to treat Athlete's Foot and Dhobie Itch (excluding Lamisil Once, which is for Athlete's Foot only). Lamisil Gel is additionally suitable for Ringworm and other candidal skin infections.

4. Does Lamisil treat all types of fungal infections?
No - There are other fungal infections that Lamisil should not be used for. Lamisil is not suitable for:
  • Thrush - itching, redness and unusual discharge, affecting the external and internal surface of the genitals. (Click here for Thrush treatments...)
  • Oral Thrush - Candidal infection in the mouth. (Click here for Oral Thrush Treatments...)
  • Fungal Nail Infection - Caused by a similar fungus to that of Athlete's Foot, the nail becomes brittle, thick and discoloured. (Click here for Fungal Nail Treatments...)
  • Pityriasis Versicolor of the scalp - A problematic yeast infection of the skin. In places where creams won't reach the scalp, try a shampoo treatment...
  • Sweat Rash - Itchiness and swelling caused by skin rubbing together. It affects areas such as the under arms, breasts, behind the knees or in the groin area (not to be confused with Jock Itch). There are other anti-fungal and hydrocortisone creams that are specifically designed for sweat rash. (Click here to view...)

    5. Where do I use Lamisil?
Lamisil can be used on the feet, skin folds, and main areas of skin. Avoid use on the face and on the genitals.

    6. Can Lamisil be used to prevent these infections from occurring?
Lamisil is a treatment, not a preventative. However, once you have treated yourself for the first time, Lamisil can help to prevent the fungal infection from returning (providing you help yourself by keeping the affected area clean and dry).

    7. What is the reason for having a spray, gel and a cream?
All of the Lamisil range is identical in the sense they all contain 1% Terbinafina Hydrochloride. The various available solutions for Lamisil are purely designed for customer preference and ease of application. Some may prefer the cream as it offers the most moisturisation, where as the gel consists of a larger quantity of water, for the more sensitive user. The spray is useful as it treats the harder to reach areas and is easy to use.

    8. How does Lamisil Once work as a one-off treatment?
Lamisil Once contains the same active ingredient as the remaining Lamisil range, and kills the fungi in the same way (please refer to Q. 2. for an explanation). This particular product is designed for the feet only but the difference with this one-off treatment, is that the clear coloured base creates a film that continuously supplies the skin with the anti-fungal ingredient. After about 3 days the film fades. By that time the treatment has been fully absorbed and continues to work within the skin. When applying Lamisil Once to the feet, you must cover the base of the foot and in-between the toes entirely, to ensure successful treatment.

    9. How long does Lamisil take to work?
With any Lamisil product, all instructions correctly followed, treatment should be complete in a week. However, skin may take up to 4 weeks to heal depending on how severe the infection had become. To help with this healing process, Click here to take a look at what Skin Protectants there are available...

    10. Are there any precautions or likely side effects?
Some people using Lamisil will experience slight redness, itching or stinging. These affects are nothing to worry about and treatment can usually continue without any problems. Occasionally, some people have an allergic reaction to Lamisil, such as pain and swelling. If this occurs, discontinue use and seek advice from your doctor.
Before using a Lamisil product, consult with a doctor if:
  • If you are pregnant.
    Do not use Lamisil if:
  • You are breast feeding.
  • You are hyper-sensitive (allergic) to any of the ingredients (Q16. for full ingredients).
  • You are under the age of 16 years of age. (18 years when using Lamisil Once).

    11. What does the AT stand for in Lamisil AT 1%?
The AT stands for Athlete's foot Treatment.

    12. What is Dhobie (Jock) Itch?
Ringworm of the groin (tinea cruris) is a fungal skin infection of the inner thighs and the groin. This can sometimes affect the scrotum and the buttocks. It is often referred to as jock itch but other common names include crotch rot, dhobi itch (or dhobie itch).

    13. What is Ringworm?
Ringworm (Tinea Corporis) is a fungal infection that occurs on main areas of skin. Ringworm forms round, raised flaky patches on the skin, which are lighter in the middle, making them appear "ring-like" (hence the name). Ringworm can be easily spread. It can be treated with Lamisil Gel, however, if you believe your family have also caught Ringworm, visit your family doctor for a suitable treatment.

    14. What is Athlete's Foot?
Athlete's Foot is a fungal infection of the foot caused by bacteria on the skin that feed on dead skin cells and love warm, moist places. This condition is primarily a problem for people who wear tight-fitting trainers or don't dry their feet properly.

    15. Can you buy Lamisil Tablets?
Lamisil tablets are not available to buy as an over the counter medicine (OTC). They are a prescription only medicine. If you have a private or NHS prescription (U.K only) for Lamisil Tablets, we will be able to provide them for you if you send your prescription to us. Click here to use our prescription service...
