About Chafing of the Thighs

chafing of the thighs
Chafing of the thighs is one of the most common forms of chafing. It can be a problem for walkers, runners, sportsmen and almost anyone engaging in some form of physical activity. Overweight and obese individuals are also prone to the condition.

During movement, the thighs are typically prone to rubbing and can chafe easily, especially during warm weather. This is particularly unpleasant as it can restrict movement and make even the simplest of tasks a chore. Bad cases of chafing can lead to red, raw skin, blisters and open sores.

If you are trying to lose weight, chafing of the thighs can be a common obstacle. The discomfort can easily dampen motivation and discourage physical activity. Chafing can also effect our enjoyment of warm, summer weather. The simple change from trousers to shorts or a summer skirt can put some peoples thighs on a collision course, leading to red, raw rubbing that can spoil even the sunniest of days, so it is important to take the necessary measures to prevent and treat chafing of the thighs.

Preventing Chafing of the Thighs

Cover up. Wearing a pair of long, fitted shorts, such as cycling shorts, underneath your clothing will help to reduce chafing. These shorts will cover your thighs and prevent the skin on skin rubbing that causes irritation.

Keep dry. Applying a thin layer of talc or baby powder to the thighs can help to reduce friction and keep them dry. A medicated powder, such as Lanacane Mediated Body Powder can also be used. It is more absorbent than talc, soothes itching and will cool, hot and bothered skin on contact. Other powder worth considering are Zeasorb Absorbent Powder and Vagisil Feminine Powder. An antiperspirant, such as Odaban Antiperspirant Spray or Neat 3B Action Cream can also be used to keep your legs dry. Neat 3B Action Cream is an emollient and antiperspirant, making particularly useful in cases of chafing where sweating is a contributing factor.

Lubricate. Keeping your thighs lubricated will reduce the soreness and irritation experienced when they rub. Products such as petroleum jelly and baby oil are popular solutions, but they can make a mess of clothing. Lanacane Anti-Chafing Gel, while not a lubricant, is a clear, non-greasy gel with an anti-friction formula. It dries on contact to form a breathable, protective barrier that reduces friction and the associated irritation.

Lose weight. While clearly not the case for everyone, weight can be a factor. Chafing, particularly of areas such as the buttocks, thighs and armpits, is often associated with obesity. If you think your chafing could be linked to your weight, we have a useful BMI calculator that will give you an idea of the shape you are in.
