Shingles (Herpes zoster) Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a common viral infection of the nerves, which results in a painful rash. It can occur anywhere on the body and is caused by the Varicella zoster virus, which is the virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles is caused by a reactivation of this virus in a person that has already had chickenpox at some point. On reactivation the virus travels from the nerve roots, where it has been hibernating, via the nerve paths to the skin. Shingles causes skin sensitivity and a burning sensation as the virus travels down the nerve paths. A rash appears 2-3 days later, which turns into blisters and can leave small scars. Shingles is not preventable but is rarely serious. To help ease the pain and discomfort it is recommended that the rash be left uncovered and not scratched. Calamine lotion can be used to reduce the irritation and analgesics such as aspirin and paracetamol used to ease the pain. Shingles usually subsides within a month.
