Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Non-steroidal anti-inflammtory drugs (NSAIDs) are a group of medicines that provide relief by changing the body's response to pain, swelling and high temperature. The two most common NSAIDs are aspirin and ibuprofen. Both work by blocking the action of cyclo-oxygenase, a substance in the body involved in the production of various chemicals, some of which are known as prostaglandins. The body produces prostaglandins in response to injury and certain conditions and diseases. They cause pain, swelling and inflammation. Aspirin and ibuprofen block the production of these prostaglandins making them effective at reducing inflammation and pain. Using tablets and creams containing Aspirin or Ibuprofen can provide relief from headaches, period pain, dental pain, migraine, backache, muscular pain, rheumatic pain, neuralgia, cold & flu symptoms, feverishness and the pain and swelling of sunburn.
