Since the withdrawal of Gynol II® and Orthocreme®, Gygel Contraceptive Gel is the only spermicidal gel in the United Kingdom available for use with a diaphragm contraceptive, without prescription. Gygel: Use as a spermicidal contraceptive in conjunction with barrier methods of contraception. To be used by adult women only. Directions: Spread the gel over the diaphragm surface and also around the rim, allowing it to come into contact with the cervix. After intercourse, keep the diaphragm and spermicidal jelly in place and remain untouched for at least 6-8 hours. If within this time, sexual intercourse is repeated, an additional application of Gygel must be made first. A vaginal applicator should be used to insert more Gygel. Douching is not recommended, but if desired it should be deferred for at least six hours after intercourse. Important information: Spermicidal preparations are intended for use in conjunction with barrier methods of contraception such as condoms, diaphragms and caps. This product does not protect against HIV (AIDS) or other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). A latex condom should be used to protect against the spread of STDs. If irritation occurs on the vagina or the penis, discontinue use. This product should not be used if pregnancy is suspected or confirmed.
