• Specific Ringworm Infections:
Ringworm is not, as the name suggests, worm related, but in fact a fungal infection of the skin that can affect people of ages. It is the general term used for Dermatophytosis, a skin infection caused by the fungi Dermatophytes. It is more commonly referred to as 'ringworm' because of its distinctive red, ring-like rash it can leave on the skin.
There are a variety of different types, as seen below, all of which are contagious and passed on through skin contact and sharing of personal belongings such as, towels, clothing and bedding.- Skin Ringworm, tinea corporis.
- Scalp Ringworm, tinea capitis.
- Foot Ringworm, tinea pedis, more commonly known as (athlete's foot)
- Nail Ringworm, tinea unguium, more commonly known as (fungal nail infection)
- Groin ringworm, tinea cruris, more commonly known as (jock itch).
The appearance of ringworm differs depending on which body part is affected, it is quite commonly a scaly red, oval or ring shaped patch on the skin. The skin infection spreads from the centre outwards, creating a circular shape. These infected areas are usually itchy. Ringworm can be effectively treated using an antifungal cream.
