Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent was born in Oran, Algeria in 1936. At the age of 17, he left home for Paris, where he worked for the designer Christian Dior. He was appointed CEO of the company following Dior's death in 1957. In 1960, he was conscripted into the French military to fight during the Algerian War of Independence. The resulting trauma led him to be institutionalised for a short while. On his return to Paris he founded his own label with the famous initials of YSL.
