Osteoporosis Osteoporosis means "porous bones" and the risk of this increases with age and mainly affects women after the menopause. It is the drop in production of the hormone oestrogen which has a detrimental effect on bone density. Although bone density peaks in the twenties there are steps you can take to reduce further loss and help prevent fractures. Give-up smoking; Reduce your alcohol intake; Increase the amount of calcium in your diet; Start taking some weightbearing exercises.
