Horse Chestnut Products:
Horse chestnut (aesculus hippocastanum) has been used as a health supporting plant for centuries. The seeds, more commonly known as conkers, contain saponins (aescin) which have anti-inflammatory and astringent (blood-toning vessels) properties. Studies have shown that the extract can help to tone the veins and aid bloodflow. It can also help to treat disorders such as varicose veins, haemorrhoids and problems associated with poor circulation.
In the treatment of varicose veins, aescin is thought to influence the initial phase of inflammation by exerting a sealing effect on leaky capillaries. The horse chestnut extract also contains flavanoids which act as further anti-inflammatories and tannins which support the astringent action of the aescin.
