Fungal infections (mycoses) occurs when fungi pass our natural resistance barriers and establish an infection.
Most of us suffer from a fungal infection (mycosis) at some point in our lives. Fungal infections of the skin are perhaps the most common fungal infections we experience. These infections are usually caused by an imbalance or excessive growth of normally harmless strains of fungus found on the skin. Though symptoms can be unpleasant, most fungal skin infections can be treated quickly and effectively.
Common fungal infections often fall into one of two groups; those caused by dermatophytes (parasitic fungi) and those caused by the Candidia species of yeast.
Dermatophyte infections (dermatophytosis) can affect the skin hair and nails. Ringworm (tinea corporis), athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), fungal nail infection (tinea unguium) and ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis) are all dermatophyte infections.
Thrush (candidiasis), intertrigo, oral thrush (oral candidiasis) and fungal nappy rash are yeast infections caused by the Candida species of yeast. Pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor) is a fungal skin infection caused by another genus of yeasts.
