Should the dose be reduced in elderly sufferers?
No. There is no indication that dosage reduction is necessary in the elderly.
Can Senokot be used during pregnancy or breast-feeding?
It is important to seek advice from your doctor before using medicines in pregnancy or breast-feeding.
Is Senokot suitable for diabetics, and those with special dietary needs?
Senokot tablets have negligible sugar content. However, the syrup and the granule formulations contain sugar and are not suitable for diabetics. Senokot tablets and syrup are gluten-free and therefore suitable for coeliacs (however, Senokot granules are not gluten free). All Senokot products are suitable for vegetarians. They do not contain nuts or genetically modified products. Senokot syrup and granules are also lactose-free.
Can Senokot be taken for long-term use?
Senokot should only be taken for the relief of occasional or non-persistent constipation. If symptoms persist for longer than three days, consult your doctor.

How quickly does Senokot work?

How does Senna work?
Senna contains sennosides, active ingredients also found in foods such as rhubarb, which in themselves have no activity in the upper gut. In the bowel, however, they are activated by bacteria present, and are able to gently stimulate the nerves which regulate bowel movement. This in turn leads to peristalsis (rhythmical muscular contractions) and the passage of stools.
Will Senokot stop absorption of other medication or food?
Senokot Tablets, Syrup and Granules work specifically in the colon, therefore should not affect absorption of other medication or food. It would, however, be sensible to consult a doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medication.
