Cradle cap, also known as infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis, is a very common condition that affects most newborn babies and young children at some point during their infancy. The condition, also known as infantile dermatitis of the scalp, is most likely to appear during a child's first three months. It generally lasts for a few weeks or months and should disappear altogether around the age of two.
Cradle cap is characterised by thick, greasy, scaly yellow patches or scab-like plaques on the surface of the skin. Despite its unpleasant appearance, cradle cap is a temporary and harmless condition that won't cause your little one any bother or irritation at all. In fact, your baby probably won't even know that they have the condition.
The condition usually starts out as a red, scaly rash on the scalp that develops into the scaly patches mentioned above. The cause of cradle cap is not known, but many believe that it might be due to an overproduction of sebum in the sebaceous glands caused by hormones from the mother remaining in the baby's system after birth.
