Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent was born in Oran, Algeria in 1936. At the age of 17 he left home for Paris where he worked for the designer Christian Dior. He was put in charge of the company following the death of Dior in 1957. In 1960 he was conscripted into the French military to fight during the Algerian war of independence, the resulting trauma led him to be institutionalized for a short while.
