Varicose veins occur mainly in the legs and develop when valves in perforating veins do not close properly and the blood flows back to the superficial veins. This backflow creates a bulge of venous blood, which we call varicose veins. These can look unsightly and cause pain, but can be managed if they are not too severe.

Self-help measures include exercise such as walking and flexing the leg muscles when sitting for long periods. Try including more fibre in the diet to avoid constipation and try to avoid standing for long periods of time.

For topical relief a gel containing horse chestnut, red vine leaf or witch hazel may help to alleviate symptoms. Red vine leaf and horse chestnut can also be taken internally. They contain ingredients designed to strengthen and tone the walls of veins, reduce swelling and fluid leakage. Keep your circulation healthy by including antioxidants in your diet.
