Toothache is a pain in the jaw made by a problem tooth or teeth.

Every tooth is covered in a hard, protective layer called enamel. This enamel is even tougher then bone and it surrounds a second layer called dentin. Dentin is the calcified mineral that makes up the structure of the tooth. In the centre of the tooth is a much softer, pulpy material. When this soft centre becomes inflamed, it can cause a lot of pain. This painful inflammation is called pulpitis.
