Sun Burn Relief & Aftersun

Spending time in the sun is all part of the fun of summer. It is important that we protect ourselves against the harmful damage that can be caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays. Wearing sunscreen, covering up and avoiding long exposure times are recommended precautions to take to avoid burning. Warning signs to look out for include reddening of the skin, soreness and feelings of heat such as the skin being warm to the touch.
When we do burn it is very unpleasant, the skin is red and sore and may flake or peel after a few days. In severe cases sunburn can cause blistering of the skin. Symptoms associated with heatstroke such as nausea, headaches and dizziness may also be experienced. If you develop sunburn it is important that you cover up and avoid direct sunlight. Cooling the skin with tepid water will help as will applying a moisturising cream or after-sun lotion. Anti-inflammatory pain relief such as ibuprofen will help with reduce pain and swelling. Calamine lotion will help prevent itching and infection of the skin due to scratching. Drinking fluids is important as this will replace water lost during sweating and prevent dehydration.
If your or your infant's sunburn becomes very red and painful, or develop a fever or blisters or a rash it is important that you contact your doctor.
