The dry, tickly cough is an unproductive version of the common cold, where the symptoms typically come without bronchial congestion (found in chesty coughs). Instead, these types of coughs aggravate the back of the throat and lungs, causing a continuous and persistent cough that can be very painful if it is accompanied by a sore throat. The irritating cough reflex can easily be triggered by the environment you are in, for example central heating (which can be frustrating during the cold winter months). Night coughs can also be persistent, preventing good sleep.
To treat this type of cough, a simple linctus can be used containing glucose/glycerin, honey or lemon to soothe and coat the throat. Other medicines, known as "suppressants", contain active ingredients such as pholcodine, dextromethorphan and codeine to reduce the cough reflex.
